What is Chemical Protective Clothing?
Chemical protective clothing is PPE that shields and protects workers against contact with chemical, physical and biological hazardous substances. These substances include all solids, liquids and gases that can harm the health of a person.
The degree of protection required depends on the nature of work and level of exposure. Various materials protect against chemicals. You will find coveralls for men and coveralls for women in these different materials.
Safetyshop stocks chemical protective clothing such as coveralls, chemical resistant aprons, and disposable gloves in various materials, including:
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) protects the wearer against substances such as acids, fats and petroleum hydrocarbons.
- Neoprene has a high level of tensile strength and withstands hot temperatures.
- Butyl shields the skin from gases and vapours.
- Nitrile protects workers from most chemicals and cannot easily tear.
- Silver Shield is lightweight and flexible and protects against most toxic substances. It does, however, tear easily.
Our range of protective coveralls features a highly protective Tyvek coverall with a hood and boots that is robust, splash-proof and repels water. A boilersuit, with excellent resistance to acids, alkalis and other hazardous chemicals, is also included in this range of chemical resistant overalls.
Many employees would like to know if certain chemical clothing can be used against all chemicals. As explained above, the material and extent of protection depend on what workers are exposed to during work activities. Some exposures require higher and more extensive levels of protection.
You may also need additional PPE such as masks or respirators for complete protection. Here at Safetyshop, we have you covered and have all the PPE you need to supplement your chemical resistant clothing.
Classification of Chemical Protective Clothing
Different types of chemical protective clothing, such as a boiler suit and Tyvek coverall, apply to different high-risk hazards. You, as an employer, must make sure which chemical resistant coveralls are applicable. These can be either gas-tight, liquid-tight, solid particle-tight or spray tight.
The list of high-risk exposures and working environments is not finite. Every employer must therefore thoroughly and continuously assess work environments and implement preventive measures such as the correct PPE.
Safetyshop has Chemical Protective clothing that is compliant with BS EN 467. Made of soft, lightweight fabric, yet is still robust, durable and hard wearing. All the seams are sewn and welded for extra protection, and the boilersuit itself helps reduce the spread of viruses and germs, thus making it a good choice for those working in high-risk medical environments. These items are made of soft, lightweight fabric yet are still robust, durable and hard-wearing. Depending on the situation, they may need to be worn alongside other protective wear, such as masks and goggles, in order to be fully effective. Our Tyvek Disposable Lab Coat is ideal for use in clean rooms when items cannot be reused, but would also be useful for paint spraying. Feet and hands also have to be protected, of course, and both our Disposable Overshoes and Polyco Nitri-Tech III Flock-Lined Gloves are the perfect products.
