Why do you need PPE Signs?

As an employer, you have a duty of care to the people in your workplace – employees and visitors alike. Everyone in the workplace needs to know exactly what Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in each area, and the easiest way to communicate it is by displaying PPE signs.

The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 aim to ensure that if risks cannot be controlled by other means, then personal protective equipment is correctly selected and used for the safety of people at work. It is your responsibility as an employer to make sure that your workers are informed of the requirements to use personal protective equipment (PPE). Failure to ensure that the correct PPE is available and used can lead to serious penalties. In some cases, it may be deemed a breach of signage requirements under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

If employees need to wear protective clothing or protective coveralls in order to work safely, there must be clear safety clothing signs to warn them. Signage can be used not only to inform people of the need for safety clothing but also to guide them on its use. For example, if hearing protection is required, a sign can supply information on the correct fitting of the protective equipment.

At Safetyshop we have an extensive range of PPE signs UK customers can choose from to meet your legal obligations and keep your workforce and visitors safe.

PPE Mandatory Signs

These signs indicate that anyone entering a designated area or using certain equipment must have protective wear – ranging from face shields to high visibility clothing. Safety Clothing (PPE) signs are easily recognisable in a standard blue and white scheme and attention-grabbing red for PPE warning signs. Position these where your safety message needs to be conveyed most urgently. Clear infographics mean that people can see exactly what protective garments need to be worn in the area at-a-glance. This is particularly helpful for those who are new to the workplace and for visitors, as well as providing a permanent reminder for regular staff.

Positioning PPE Safety Signs

Your signage must be placed in prominent positions so that the information cannot be missed. Our Safetyshop range has PPE required signs to cover all angles. In addition to standard wall signage, we have specialist options including:

  • 3D signs visible from multiple directions

  • Floor signs with non-slip surface

  • Photoluminescent signs for darker environments

Some signage provides two in one functionality. For example, our safety zoning wall marking kits include a floor sign to indicate in writing that PPE must be worn. They also include high impact wall stripes to be used at access points to the zone, such as around a door frame.

For dual impact, install a talking sign. These come with a series of pre-recorded messages, or you can record your own. Talking signs are also ideal if you have employees or visitors with visual impairments.

Where to Use Specific PPE Safety Clothing Signs

The type of PPE to be worn needs to be clear in your safety clothing signs. Hazards and risks will vary in different parts of the workplace, and PPE requirements will vary accordingly.

Safetyshop's high noise level signs can be positioned around the workplace to indicate areas in which ear protection is necessary. If noise levels are above 85dB, then ear protection is mandatory, and where noise levels are above 80 dB, ear protection must be available on request. The ear protection signs are made of durable material and comply with safety standards on signs and signage. In the UK, 17,000 people suffer from some degree of hearing loss, tinnitus or other ear conditions, and exposure at work to high noise levels can result in long-term hearing loss. As such, there is a duty on employers to ensure that their employees are protected against excessive noise levels.

If your workplace has areas where eyes require protection, make use of our PPE eye protection signs. Our 'you only have one pair of eyes! Protect them' signs provide a clear warning to employees that protective eye equipment should be worn.

Make sure that the PPE provided and used is suitable for the job. If there are multiple types of PPE available, such as masks, gloves or disposable lab coats, be specific about which type must be worn. You will know from your risk assessments the exact PPE needed for each area, and you must communicate this clearly to everyone who enters the workplace.

Safetyshop also offers a range of custom information signs, which you can tailor to the needs of your work environment.
