Your guide to a smoke free workplace
In 2007 The Health Act 2006 will implement a workplace-smoking ban in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The act lays down duties, requiring you to: Display a no smoking sign and Prevent persons from smoking in smoke free places.

No smoking
English Smoking Ban - From 1 July 2007, virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England will become smokefree.
The Smoke-free (Signs) Regulations set out:
a) the requirements for no-smoking signs under smokefree legislation, and
b) whose legal responsibility it will be to ensure that smokefree vehicles display no-smoking signs.

No Smoking Signs for Premises
All smokefree premises will be required to display a no-smoking sign in a prominent position at each entrance that:
a) is the equivalent of A5 in area,
b) displays the international no-smoking symbol in colour, a minimum of 70mm in diameter, and
c) carries the words in characters that can be easily read:
"No smoking. It is against the law to smoke in these premises."On the sign, the words "these premises" may be changed to refer to the premises where the sign is displayed, for example "this hotel".

No Smoking Signs for Vehicles
Vehicles will be required to display a no-smoking sign in each enclosed compartment that can accommodate people. These signs must display the no smoking symbol in colour and be at least 70mm in diameter.

The Smoke-free Premises etc. (Wales) Regulations 2007 - Welsh Smoking Ban
You are required by law to display a no smoking sign in a prominent position at or near each entrance to smoke-free premises so that people entering can easily see it.
If premises have more than one entrance used by employees, visitors or customers then you must display one notice at each entrance.
A no smoking sign must satisfy the following requirements set out by the regulations:
• Be flat and rectangular and at least 160x230mm in size. • Display the international no smoking symbol in red (at least 85mm in diameter).
• Contain the following statement: 'Mae ysmygu yn y fangre hon yn erbyn y gyfraith/It is against the law to smoke in these premises'.
